I've been trying all day but just can't. I know I have a lot of things to be thankful for but today it's hard for me to feel that way.

I write music. I've been doing so for 10+ years. Been playing some sort of instrument since 3rd grade. Yet I receive little to no compensation or accolades. Same with my visual art.

Since I was a kid people always told me "follow your dreams, work hard and success will come." That is a fucking lie. Here I am in debt to school so I could learn how to write notes, in debt for meager music equipment to make the music and almost nothing to show for it. No money, no notoriety, and I practically got to beg people to download my free music and even then nobody does.

And all those hours I took to practice, and compose and do things with quality were hours that nobody gives a crap about when I try to get "real" jobs. "So how do you think your previous work history, wait it say's you're a composer and stay at home dad...So ummm, well we were looking for someone with experience."

I've entered contests, tried doing shows, tried all the "social media". Tried all the DYI music industry tips and I haven't seen any of it make a difference. People just pass up my music like so much discarded chip bags.

Lables don't want me, independent gatekeepers don't want anything to do with me. Out of the 100's of emails and overtures to music bloggers and writers I have had a grand total of 3 reviews. Three. In ten years.

I think of all those hours. I think of all the money/things/time my family has given up because of "my dream". I then I think what was/is the point? Having a bunch of albums sitting on my hard drive?

Conclusion? Don't follow your music/art dreams unless you're obviously a prodigy or got lots of daddies money to burn on the right connections. Get a real job. At least you'll have vacation time and some money to actually take one.

One depressed monkey,
bubbles

Split Infinitive is the best album ever.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 318px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kTl9Jjl6bWg/S_g96UdMbNI/AAAAAAAAAC0/AaINRPErXoE/s320/Split+Infinitive+front+cover.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5474193419201703122" />

My new album "Split Infinitive" is the best album ever. That's ok. Who really wants to hear cyber blah blah right now? Instead I have been writing music and am in the process of putting together my next full length release!

This next album is a departure from minimal house and ambient sounds of "Economics 008" and the looped sounds of "Commuter". It does share the traits with my first release the "RMX Sessions" in that every note is played or written by me. No samples, no loops (well maybe a MIDI drum loop was used here and there, shhhh don't tell).

Like "Economics 008" I will be Beta Testing this album with friends and colleges and I am nearly to that stage. Last time I put out the entire album for comment when it was, for all intents and purposes, finished. I waited for comment and was ready to change things upon advice.

The only advice I got was to get a better cover. And I did, thanks to Tigertail art.

So this time if people want a sneak peak of the album, BEFORE it is done, this can be arranged. I am not sure exactly how but I'll figure something out. Maybe dropbox.com.

Now you come in...I ask, if YOU want to help decide/give advice on things like song order, problems in the mix, praise, constructive criticism, anything: email me at

bubbles@bubblesmusic.net,

or DM me on twitter @bubblesmusic, and let me know that you "want to beta test the new album".

Only 10 people will be in on this. So first come first served, with a steamin' hot pile of bubbles.
YUM.

Truly,
bubbles
bubbles@bubblesmusic.net
www.twitter.com/bubblesmusic
www.reverbnation.com/bubblesmusic

Don't call it a comeback I've been here for months.

I should probably figure out a way to hook Twitter up to this. I’ve released, written and recorded, produced, published, marketed several albums following advice from CDbaby Podcast, CyberPR, David Hooper and others. I’ve spend hours building and extending social networks. Not to mention hours of practicing. I’ve spent money on hosting and websites, paper and envelops. I spent money on college tuition to educate myself in music and business. I spend countless hours with SEO. I’ve played 75% of the venues in Portland. Wasted away days branding, schmoozing, and everything else you are “supposed” to do.

I’ve sent interesting press kits to the local Portland media outlets, as well as all over the world. Sent my records, then MP3’s, both asking publications if I could send my stuff to them and sending them blindly. Not to mention I’m aware of timing of publication dates, other events in the week, similar events, and so on and so on. Yet to this day NOT A SINGLE PUBLISHED REVIEW! Seven years people; seven years I’ve been preceeding with a business mentality. I have thousands of visits, fans, and playes on my Myspace as well as other web 2.0 sites with out the use of a single robot. I don’t use unethical music marketing practices like stacking my plays and visits. It all is genuine traffic. But nary a review. Nary a mention by anybody except for a couple of kind souls comments on Myspace. I need not underscore the fact my music sales are dismal.

I have treated my music endeavors like a job. But it has turned out to be a job that I pay my employer when I clock out. I know this because I got serious and took an accounting class to learn how to properly keep track of my business finances. Five years of in the Red. This is with the utmost of frugality. Still, I must pay rent on my studio space, electricity, hosting, and a myriad of other expenses that are basic for any business.

So I ask myself, what it going on? Is my music that bad? If so, many people have lied straight to my face and said they love it. Only two people have told me, “I can’t get into this.” I truly believe my music is as good if not better than most folks in my genre, electronic music; and it holds its own against all types of genres. But beyond subjective assessments of music, many other “successful” independent artists are not considered to be music geniuses, ground breakers, or otherwise musically outstanding, yet continue to enjoy media attention and critical buzz.

The questions are,

-What are the causal factors that are influencing the outcome?

-What do I do when I so desperately want to make a living, and/or recognition, in what I feel is my calling but following the prescribed path just ends up in disappointment and throwing good money after bad?

After countless hours of pondering I have only come up with a few plausible scenarios why I feel I am failing,

1, Marketers are full of poop, and are trying to create a business model where musicians cannot access success with out going through their gateway therefore insuring their income. The major labels have fired countless marketers, executives, managers, and reps who are now forcing indy artists to go through them for recognition. The A-list music blogger may claim independent now, but last year was working for Sony/BMG. The major label companies are dying but the system is alive and well trying retrench to ensure their revenue streams.

2. The city I live in claims to be open to all music, but is lying to me. For instance, here in Portland people (media, radio, clubs, fans) claim to support electronic music but the people getting press and popularity are writing genre specific indy rock songs with the aid of Ableton or other DAW’s, throwing in synth arpeggios as the electronic part. 80’s synth rock is not Electronic Music. Yet I know countless musicians here in Portland making great EM, all of whom are being grossly overlooked, all whom are moving the music forward instead of rehashing old “favs” with the addition of a computer.

3. I am too stupid to understand what is really going on.

4. I don’t have a trust fund. AKA “Don’t let it be DIY, it should be Choose for yourself, get people to help you”. Look, sure I could make it work if I could press CD’s and vinyl, hire PR/marketing/publicist, lawyer, buy the equipment I need, pay for advertising, pay rent. Who has that kind of money? CD’s $1000, posters for your show $300, publicists $1500, postage $300, replacing the broken keyboard $500, web hosting $200, touring budget $3000…and much more ALL BEFORE I SELL 1 RECORD.

5. I try not to be egotistical. I don’t claim to be Billboard top 40 band + Billboard top 40 band + witty unusual scenario= ME, the best band in the world ever ever ever (even though I sound nothing like what I claim to, and I don’t have the wherewithal to understand that I am singing out of time/tune, and not on purpose).

Who knows? At this point I am having a music mid-life crisis. Maybe I will refuse to wash my hair, wear tight pants, act like I’m a teen in the 70’s, get an acoustic guitar, sing out of key about how my life hard is, and claim I am the best Pop music ever, then I’ll have a chance. Wait, wait...no. To quote Nina Simon,

“What will happen now? Everyone’s gone to the moon!”

After this post I will return to making music and making it available for the real fans, because I love music and because I hate whiny bloggers. My next mission is how to explain to my daughter that working hard, having talent, perfecting your craft, and being sincere will not pay rent and feed your child, but copying the trends, having a trust fund, and an earth shatteringly big ego will. pay me. A label? I’m ready to “sell out”. How about the general public? I give you music for free, should I give you a dollar to come to my shows and witness countless hours of practice just to please you? If I gave you a dollar would you come to my free show?

I know better than most that to succeed at anything you need to constantly improve and keep plugging away at your dream. Still, I need something more than pat on the back from my closest friends (they are good friends because they support me, and do it no matter what). Maybe a review in the local rags, in any magazine, a shout out, use my music that I offer for free in a movie/TV/podcast, comments on my website, people buying my music; anything that would tell me that all the hours/money doing social networking and web updates, accounting, taxes, repairs, practice, meeting people and smoozing actually works. Hours I could have been using to write music. Shit, even just some Myspace friend who are interested in my music, not promoting themselves or pretending to be a gangster.

I totally feel like I’m screaming at a wall, or trying to flirt with the wall, or making conversation with the wall, or giving the wall direct power over my actions, and still nothing. NOTHING! Do I suck that bad, is it really as bad as…Kanye’s last album?

Like my friend Dustin said, “My twitters go to my facebook and if I post about buying a circular saw or something as random people come out of the woodwork to comment. We recorded an album in Feb and I didn't get one piece of feedback.”

I am not spending hard earned money on equipment, and websites, and album registrations, marketing, because I like to throw away money. I’m doing it because this is what the so called experts write about in books and disseminate in podcasts say will help me earn a living in music. WTF! Really? The first band I was in formed in 1994. I’ve done radio show, recorded/released album after album for myself and others. I began working at the business/marketing end of music seven years ago. And to this day I see little return on my investments in both time and money (granted the self respect I get when I feel I created something quality really feels good).

Props to Prophetnoise who is an extremely talented musician and getting the same treatment as I. Props to Josh from the UK for actually taking the time to message me on Myspace that he likes my music. Props to Megan, Mike and Anne, and Bria who actually came out to shows, unlike many of my friends who claim to support me. Props to Carly for putting up with a musician. Props to funk/reggae for making me happy. Props to electronic music/jazz for giving me landscapes to run to. Props to punk/hip-hop for giving people like me a voice. Big Ups to Dustin and Noah Peterson who, to this day, are the ONLY musicians of hundreds that I have met and dozens I have directly asked who have actually listened to my music and given me specific feedback. Want-Signed.com and the whole 2ndRate crew gets big ups for keeping it real. I got not beef with a handful of other folks, you know who you are.

F-you to people who call all electronic music Techno. Is all music played with a cello is Classical? Two big middle fingers to bands that use robots to artificially inflate fan counts, song plays, twitter followers, and otherwise trick the already over worked music writer, and public, into thinking you the most popular thing since the Iphone when really you just have a friend with some computer savvy and you straight bite. Giant Suck Me to music writers/periodicals who claim they are open to all types of music but are either corporate sluts, or just write about their friends. Another big F’ers to the dozens of self proclaimed marketing/PR gurus just talking opinion and no fact. And the biggest FU to musicians that “know” what music is “supposed” to be. It’s people like you that feed the public bias against being open to what music they connect with as opposed to what’s “cool”.

I’m not done being pissed, but I’m done ranting. In the end I will continue to make my art no matter what because if I don’t I will go crazy and kill myself. So, support me or not what the fuck can I do…

A very woeful,

bubbles

www.twitter.com/bubblesmusic

www.bubblesmusic.net

Last chance to catch the whole Economics 008

Greetings,

The beta test is almost over. I just wanted to let you know this is your last chance to listen to my new upcoming release Economics 008. You have one more week to listen to the album in its entirety and make suggestion about anything before I execute those suggestions and send this bad boy for distribution. The album is only available at www.reverbnation.com/bubblesmuisc or through this Tunepak URL…

http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/1286236

For those who sign up to be my fan you will be able to download some tracks off of Economics 008 as a “Fan Reach” promotion. This will only be available to my fans through www.reverbnation.com/bubblesmusic and will be ready next week. It’s not hard to be my fan because really all you have to do is press a button. Being my fan, and signing up for “bubbles’ News”, my newsletter of all things bubbles, gets you special access to material and shows. Free stuff people. And as I grow you get more stuff so it’s a win win.

Some good advice was given about the cover art so that will be updated with the help of the artist that drew my logo. I also got some comments on marketing. What I am amazed is the lack of comment on the music. Like I said, very few musicians give you this kind of control so take advantage of it. Comment publicly on any of my comment sections in any of my social networking sites. Or email me privately at bubbles@bubblesmusic.net

That’s all for now. Have a good one.

Peace,
bubbles
www.reverbnation.com/bubblesmusic
www.twitter.com/bubblesmusic

Do you want to produce my next release?

Greetings!

Did you ever want to have influence over the musical direction of a band you like? Well, now you can. I am opening up my creative process to more input. My next project will be entirely open to comment, direction, and ideas from you. From the very concept to the final product, you will have the ability to shape my artistic work. In essence you will be the producer!

The more active you are as a fan, the more “sway” you will have. People who are on the mail list, previous supporters, bought any of my music, know me personally, or are active web friends will have the most say. So go and sign up for the mail list at www.bubblesmusic.net in the big box that says “Join mail list”. Or write me directly at bubbles@bubblesmusic.net or on twitter at www.twitter.com/bubblesmusic.

Let me start with a test run of a song. Let’s start with the concept (i.e. mood, story, about) and the electronic sub-genre or cross of genres. Remember folks, I write all my music, so no sample based ideas, unless I record the sample! So start producing and send me your producer’s notes!

The demo song, in all stages of development will be posted on www.Reverbnation.com/bubblesmusic exclusively for people who have become “my fan”.

Peace,
Bubbles
www.reverbnation.com/bubblesmusic
www.myspace.com/bubbles

Beta Test my new Album!

Greeting Chimps and Chimpettes,

Just like Google, I am going to beta test my new album “Economics 008”. I want feed back about the songs, and the production. I have decided to post the entire “Economics 008” only on www.reverbnation.com/bubblesmusic to get some feed back before I go into the final phase of full fledged release. I’m asking for your help to make bubbles even better!

There is still a bit of time for me to make some minor changes (once it goes to Itunes, there is no room for correction), and there is plenty of time to make use feedback on future projects. Any feedback, constructive criticism, kudos, thoughts, and musings are welcome. You can send them privately via email at bubbles@bubblesmusic.net or you can just comment here, or on any one of my social networking pages.

Here are some of the things I’m looking for,

Does the album flow well?
Are the songs clear and produced well?
What genre would classify the music?
What other music does this remind you of (artists and/or songs)?
Are the songs balanced in their volume?
Do you like the art work (check my pics)?
What is your favorite song?

I’m a thick skinned monkey so don’t hold back. Recently I have been thinking a lot about perspective, reason, and emotion. During the course of last week I encountered two instances where I found myself very frustrated and angry at people for engaging in behaviors that I think are futile, a waste of energy, and lacking in logic.

One instance was a group of fur protesters at a downtown shop in Portland, OR. They were waving signs, yelling at passing cars and people on the light rail. My first thought was a snarky “wow, I bet a lot of people take the Max go to buy a fur coat.” Then, as the logic circuits of my brain tried to process the experience I began to ask myself what is the cost/benefit of their actions to our community and society as a whole. I thought about the benefit of caring for animals and the environment. I thought of the benefit of exercise of free speech. But I was disturbed that some much vigor and anger was going towards this cause while there were so many people hungry right in front of them, literally. If they took that energy and cooked a meal, joined a soup kitchen, collect blankets, what ever, wouldn’t the benefit be much greater?

The other instance where I just had to wag my finger, involves a discussion on Facebook. The discussion started over a friends post about the poor business practices of a local booking agent. I strongly believe that people in the music industry should be held to reasonable standards of business. In a comment I voiced my disagreement with another commenter’s posts about the “whinny” feel of the subject. Mr. Commenter felt that airing such grievances over the internet was unnecessary, and defended the local booking agent. I disagreed with that notion. I believe the internet is a place for unfettered communication. I also disagreed with his notion that show promoters and musicians should excuse poor business practices, like double booking a night, because “booking is a hard business”.

I believe the thing that connects these two instances is the lack of perspective, or perhaps better words are - a disconnect from the entire picture. For example, in the instance of the fur protesters, I can not understand why their energy was being devoted to animals instead of the humans in need right next to them. The homeless people where hanging out all around, asking for money, asking for food. Couldn’t the protesters see the suffering of their fellow man, or where they so engrossed in their pride that they failed to even notice? And as in the case of Mr. Commenter, he seemed to take extreme umbrage to my description of booking agent as “not so hard a job”. I felt compelled to remind him that there are people who have to make life and death decisions as part of their job, in hopes of urging perspective. I had hoped to place the discussion about the music industry in a larger context so we can get beyond petty and short sighted arguments about single instances.

I have strong reservations about the way people think that they are isolated, as if what they do in their everyday lives is not deeply intertwined with everything and everyone around them. Like when Mr. Commenter posted “Don't compare booking agents to soldiers and paramedics and I won't compare indy electronic artists to musicians.” Why not? Don’t we live in the same world? In cohort? Why not respectfully see yourself as part of a larger society where you are playing your own role. This lack of credit where credit’s due is a contributing factor to many of social ills.

I believe this disconnect from each other is why teachers and schools are underfunded and CEO’s are overpaid. It’s ironic how CEO’s seem unwilling to relinquish exorbitant salaries for the benefit of their own workers who keep the company running. It is sad how public university sports coaches are the top paid state employees by hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sadder yet, when a coach gets angry at being questioned about the unfairness school teachers and government employees having to take furlough days while he gets paid millions. A lack of disconnect.

Music, and the people who make music happen, it is wanted and necessary in our society. It always has, and all ways will. It requires dedications, time, creativity, organization, and a host of other skills and talents. These things may be difficult for some people to execute in concert. The emotion associated with this difficulty is not an indication of hard work, but rather frustration. My music is important, but not as important as the doctor who will someday care for me in my ill health.

What do you think?

Peace,
bubbles
www.reverbnation.com/bubblesmusic
www.twitter.com/bubblesmusic

There's nothing new under the sun... including this cliché.

Greeting Chimp and Chimpettes,

I love the serendipity in this world. I was going to make a comment on the CD baby DIY Podcast forums but decided against it. Drawing a blank on a blog topic, I asked my fellow Tweetorians on Twitter to come up with one. First up was Sidfaiwu with the title of this blog. Thanks and here goes…

As I read comments on the CD baby DIY Podcast website I ran across a debate between a prolific commenter and another musician. Nothing new here. The debate essentially went like this; the prolific commenter had made multiple posts with themes that suggest there are absolutes in being a successful musician. In this instance, he said that a band needs to maintain mystery and hide their everyday goings in order to be a successful artist. This was in response to a topic of conversation based on podcasting and other web 2.0 social media.

A subsequent commenter wrote that he did not understand why so many of his fellow artists made such absolutist claims even though creativity is by its nature infinite in possibility. There was a defensive response by the prolific commenter asserting there are absolutes. He sited death as proof of absolutes.

Unfortunately I have issue with the prolific commenter’s logic. First of all I am unaware of ever talking to a person who has died. I am unaware of anyone who has talked to a dead person to confirm that there is no life after our physical demise in this dimension. Therefore the claim to knowing that death is an absolute is false. I would argue that there are multiple religions claiming death as only a transitional phase of being. There are stories from Jesus to Greek gods that talk of eternal life. What about music, art, or children as a form of eternal life? No, death does not seem to be an absolute.

Other examples made by the prolific commenter of absolutism are even more wrought with logical problems so I won’t go into those.

So what does this have to do with there being nothing new under the sun? Simply put, there truly is nothing new under the sun. There are new combinations of old things, like computers and people who talk for the sake of hearing themselves talk. To think that any one individual can possess the intelligence and memory to make absolutists claims is far from likely and in my opinion laughable.

Peace,
bubbles
www.reverbnation.com/bubblesmusic

Links:

CD baby DIY Podcast - http://cdbabypodcast.com/
Twitter – www.twitter.com/bubblesmusic

Break Time, Chemical Breaks, and Chemicals

Hello Chimps and Chimpettes,

I am glad to meet all you new people, keep in touch with all you old friends. If you’re just getting to know bubbles, I invite you to read some of my older blogs at http://bubblesbloggy.blogspot.com/. Read all my blogs there because I sometimes am a lazy monkey and don’t want to post to 30 different sites on a Sunday. A
As I figure out the last bits of my next release “Economics 008” I am trying to pick what genres to call my music. While I have been influenced by all types of music from Pink Floyd, to Mozart, to Luke Vibert, my music does not necessarily sound at all like them. So what does it sound like? I went and compared it to other albums and songs and as best I could come up with is Chemical Breaks. Think of bands like the Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, and Fat Boy Slim. Still that’s not quite it. There’s a lot of Detroit Techno in my music too, at least I think. Still, not really sure if Chemical breaks really describes me.
But I guess chemicals describe Alex Rodriguez. No wait, philanthropy. No, no, wait, chemicals. I read an article in the NY Times online about his generosity to the Hurricanes.
I am not a big fan of baseball. In fact I would rather watch hockey. Still, this whole steroid crap is beginning to get on my nerves. I land on the side that they should give me the money that they earned while on steroids. This is how I came about to that conclusion; Every time I wanted to watch something like news or the Simpsons there was a stupid baseball game on. Ok, I know I’m pissing some baseball fans off but give it up. My game, football, is on Sunday. What? Do you really get up on Sunday morning saying to yourself I wish “I could really watch some Meet the Press” (not that it’s a bad show). Anyhow, baseball wouldn’t be as popular with out these big hitters, therefore my TV shows wouldn’t be preempted.
At least Michael Phelps was using a non-performance enhancer. All you guys on ‘roids should smoke massive bong hits for two years and see if you can hang. If you can perform, I will forgive the steroids. If you can’t you don’t deserve to get paid millions while other people starve, but that’s just my opinion.

Peace,
bubbles
www.twitter.com/bubblesmusic

PS Don’t forget to sign up for the bubbles mail list here… www.bubblesmusic.net

Links:
bubbles’ blog - http://bubblesbloggy.blogspot.com/
Chemical Breaks - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_beat A. He was asking “what was the last thing that inspired you to create?” I was going to think about it for a second while I made breakfast. While I cooked, I decided to try Pandora’s funk station, since I have a new band called Watermelon Funk (funky, fun, party music with a hip-hop sensibility and no gansta-izms). The first song that Pandora came up was a remake of Earth Wind and Fire’s “Shining Star” by Jamiroquai. At first I didn’t notice, but his Mr. Quai’s voice is unmistakable (don’t get your feather’s ruffled all you JamQ fans I was only jesting, I know his name isn’t Mr. Quai, it’s Mr. Jamir).
I soon realized that I wanted to blog about how bad that song was, and the difference between emulation and assimilation. In order to do that, I thought to myself, I would need to find a link to the song. So I went to use Google to find the remake. It was taking a while to find it, so I tried to multitask by listening to my Myspace friend request from bands. I try to listen or check every request, no bots used here. I liked Radium88, a trippy, spacey electronic band. They still did not cut it for the mood. I tried a couple of more bands but got the itch for Funk. I put on my Pleasure album “The Greatest Of Pleasure” to funk out to Portland’s funky own from back in the day.
While I was funking out I was inspired to update my new bands Myspace; that is, to be creative with it. I put together a fun logo to use when I create a Reverbnation page for The Watermelon. Listening to funk and uploading some demo tracks and logo for the WF reminded me that I needed to answer the Prophetnoise’s tweet.
The last thing that inspired me to create was funk. Funk and Twinkies.

Peace,
bubbles
www.bubblesmusic.net

Links:
Twitter – www.twitter.com/bubblesmusic
Prophetnoise - http://www.myspace.com/prophetnoise
Breakfast - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakfast
Pandora – www.pandora.com
Watermelon Funk - www.myspace.com/Watermelonfunk
Earth Wind and Fire - www.earthwindandfire.com
Jamiroquai - www.jamiroquai.com
Blog - http://bubblesbloggy.blogspot.com/
Google - www.goggle.com
Myspace – www.myspace.com/bubbles
Radium88 - www.myspace.com/theradium88
Funk - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk
Pleasure - http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:g9fexql5ld0e
Reverbnation - www.reverbnation.com/bubblesmusic Twinkies - http://www.hostesscakes.com/twinkies.asp

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='A. Being a chimp true to my grunts I will now write a blog about said topic. And check out the new song Long Winter.

Hello Chimps and Chimpettes,

First let me start with my name is bubbles and this is my opinion. A few of my colleagues and I have been discussing why it seems that artists, musicians in general, tend to be, in the words of a fellow musician, “dumb/obnoxious/close-minded/antagonistic/defensive”. This stems from my philosophical/sociopolitical look at the music industry and the people who work with in the field. Perhaps there is no more dumb-ness in this field than in any other. But it would seem that musicians hold the trophy for the lack logic.

Let me make an example, a musicians thread on the CDbaby Forums is started with “Seven Resolutions to Help You Succeed”. The post is simply tips to help a musican to sell music, and become overall more successful as a business. One of the first responses was classic idea that music is an Art and that thought and action towards an end of entrepreneurial sustainability is somehow anti-music. It would seem that to the proponents of this idea anything less than inspiration and sheer talent denigrates the concept of music.

This idea makes no sense to me. I believe there is no reason someone cannot be creative and logical at the same time, like Ben Franklin or Homer Simpson. Beyond that, it would seem to me that if you are trying to make a living as a musician you would act in a manor that is conducive to getting paid. Ohh, like showing up to a gig on time with every thing you need.

Another personal example is Craig’s List. In my beginning attempts to find a DJ our new hip-hop outfit called Watermelon Funk, we clearly asked for a DJ with scratch abilities, blending skill, and own equipment. What kind of answers did we get? Rappers, saxophone players, people who did not own a single record or turntable. Only a few of dozens of replies fit the description in the ad. Did these people not know how to read, or did not understand the word “DJ”?

I could go on and on with egregious examples of stupidity and close-mindedness on behalf of musician but I want to continue on to why. Perhaps it has to do with musicians shutting the parts of the brain that control inhibitions in order to increase creativity. Check out this ABC news article here.

Or perhaps it has to do with the difference between sets of social/moral drivers. For example the tendency for musicians to have low self image, but the ability to turn those inhibitions off during a performance. For some background The musical temperament: psychology and personality of musicians by Anthony Kemp.

I think I will sit on this for a while and think. This blog will probably a three part post. I would love to hear your thoughts. Please comment, or email for a private conversation.

Peace,
bubbles
www.bubblesmusic.net
bubbles@bubblesmusic.net

More Links,

Microblogging at twitter- www.twitter.com/bubblesmusic
CDbaby “Seven Resolutions to Help You Succeed”- http://www.cdbaby.org/stories/09/01/15/0970196.html
ABC news article on music and the brain-http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/DyeHard/Story?id=4386976&page=1
Find a library and get the book sucka!
Anthony Kemp: The musical temperament: psychology and personality of musicians
http://www.amazon.com/Musical-Temperament-Psychology-Personality-Musicians/dp/0198523629

CD’s are dead.

Greetings Chimps and Chimpettes,

I hope these words find you well. These days I feel knee deep in ideas and shy on time. A new song called “Recessional” is up. Another ambient jam, this one seems terrible and sweet at the same time. This will most likely be the last track on my next release “Econ 008”. The album is a collection of songs inspired by the economic troubles of 2008. Hopefully I will not have to write “Depressional” for 2009.

On a related note. Some songs that are on the new release are as of yet, unreleased and will only be available on the release. Others will be re-mixed, or re-mastered, as I am unhappy with the compression of the songs. So expect the music to only get better in quality. Also, the release will no longer be in standard CD format. With thanks to many logical and invigorating discussions with the artist Prophetnoise, my publishing company BMS and I have decided to move to a more green, and modern delivery method.

I am in development stages of this particular packaging. I can tell you it will be a small run of unique art packaging made by yours truly, signed and dated with limited run numbers on each. The music will be in a computer friendly delivery method, and also available online at most digital download/subscription sites like I-tunes and Rhapsody. More on that in a later blog. I believe the CD is dying and there are better ways for you to get your music. Ideas welcome.

Hey, thanks for listening. Love the house. Hate the snow. When I finally returned to cyberspace I got the surfing stare. Click, stare, click, stare; for hours on end. Then I snapped out of it.

I began to read what I was hypnotically absorbing. Low and behold, everyone’s is an expert at everything! Who would of thought?

I gravitate towards music industry related material, as I am trying to forge a path towards financial sustainability making music. So what did I read in said type web content? Bullshit. No body knows what they are talking about. No facts, no critical thinking. Yet many folk claim they have such a wealth of expertise on everything. Many bloggers talk endlessly about things that they think they know, and how it’s going to influence you. YOU the reader. To illustrate my point, people who talk smack on the bible and who have never read it, or vise versa. I once read a church marquee that I found very cleaver. It read “don’t quote the bible if you haven’t read it.” I like that.

Where is bubbles at? I am not sure but I intend to find out. On quick glance I talk about parts of my life on my blogs and such. Mostly I talk about my music, what inspired me, or how the music came about. I some times talk about other artist and musicians I like. Or other ways of getting the same bubbles content in different on line forms. Does it matter? Million dollar question.

What does this mean? Hell if I know. But I intend to find out. I ain’t no expert on anything, but I know what I feel. I hate bullshit. I hate the bullshit I spew; I hate the bullshit you spew. These days I can spot genuine from a mile away. Real easy too, I look for the person that doesn’t need to, have to, or want to bullshit me. That’s who I want to surround myself in 2009. Don’t care if you’re perfect, you just gotta be trying.

In 2009 I’m going to try to-
- Eliminate the bullshit I spew
- Ignore the bullshit others spew
- Critically think about everything
- Make more music
- Surround myself with genuine, intelligent, and trustworthy people
- Give less answers, ask more questions, find more facts

And if you’re going “I don’t bullshit.”, or “who does bubbles think he is?”, or if you’re insulted by what I say, or if you think I’m preaching at you, or you’re lazy…
You best be stepping out my cyber house. That’s right, get the fuck out my websites and shit, and don’t ever come back. This house is for my peeps, not you.

Peace, and I’m out.
bubbles

for straight media including bio’s, music, links, and products go to
www.bubbblesmusic.net

My blog is like a like a long twitter tweet.

Seasons greetings my chimps,

Just quickly, I would like to thank all those who came out for the show at Berbati’s in Portland last night. Hell, just trying to make a living is tough. Then I think about all the resources and money that goes into the music in advertisement. You’ll be able to comment later on this very thing, keep reading. For example I wonder how much money it took to make this ad jingle, “Frosty the Coalman”. I first heard this story on NPR’s “Wait, wait don’t tell me”. A real lovely cover of frosty the snowman but intended to display the greener side of coal. Click here for another link to news about the song. Hmmm.

How much did that association (American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity) pay to bite that song? Yet I’m here hustling to sell the music that I alone create. I see something wrong with this. You, in your infinite collective wisdom can help explain this to me. Yes you, reading this. I ask two questions,

1. Can you remember more song choruses or commercial jingles (things like the NBC jingle and Empire Carpets)?

2. What do you give a crap about in your music? Where it comes from? Who made it? Who likes it? How about do you give a crap about the instruments used, or what the lyrics or lack of say? Why do you like what you do?

Talk amongst yourselves. Then post a comment here on this blog.

Oh yes, and my new song about the economy is up on my various online spots. This time go check it out on ILike. ILike lets you hear all sorts of Indy and non Indy artists and your friends can see who you like! The song is called “Is this the bottom? Part 3”. When will the economy tank to the bottom? Part4, 5, 12 maybe? We’ll see.

Peace,
bubbles
www.bubblesmusic.net

Here are some links…
Wait, wait don’t tell me - http://www.npr.org/programs/waitwait/
Frosty the Coalman - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3q6HeImpPs http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/JustOneThing/story?id=6444773&page=1
bubbles on ILike - http://www.ilike.com/artist/Bubbles+%28Portland%2C+OR%29

Detroit goes to Washington

Greetings Chimps and Chimpettes,

There is some news on the front. First off, I hope you all had a great week. I took last week off, so to speak, and I feel very relaxed and ready for the coming months. Lots of things are on the horizon for bubbles.

I am fronting a hip-hop group still in its infancy. It is called “Watermelon Funk”. With the help of co front man BooSen, DJ Kut Throat and other special guest collaborators, this outfit is dedicated to putting the party back in hip-hop. The songs are fun, the show will be live. No posing. First show is on New Years Eve!

A new song is up, “Detroit goes to Washington”. When the heads of the big three auto makers took their private jets to ask for billions of dollars in handouts some weeks ago I just had to write a song. And, Wow! They’re back to Washington this week. All I’m saying is I want my piece of that pie.

Back to the music, I think this is the last of the faster songs. Next couple of weeks I will put some down tempo tracks. Let me know what you think. You can leave your message here, or email me at bubbles@bubblesmusic.net.

Peace,
bubbles
http://www.bubblesmusic.net/

P.S. Certainly is on mine. People are spending less, making less, and there seems to be no end in sight. I blame stupid, greedy people. Still, what good does blame do? Following every stock tick and news story doesn’t help.

So I went and started to write songs about the crisis (new one called “Up Now, Down Later” is up). As it turns out I think I am going to put these songs together into a short album (long EP, whatever you want to call it). I am not going to post the album in its entirety anywhere on the internet until after its release. But I am post many of the songs, a couple at a time, in my continuing soirees of new blog/music postings. Then they will disappear never to be seen again till I release the album.

Two questions for you,

1. And new Song.

Greetings Chimps and Chimpette’s,

The next song in my series about the current economic crisis is now up on my official website http://www.bubblesmusic.net/! Entitled Commercial Paper, the song is my interpretation of the US Government’s decision to begin to buy commercial paper, or very short term loans traditionally to businesses for them to cover expenses not met by fluctuating income streams. The song like the practice is in the trance style.

Beyond that I have begun to have a new appreciation for how people interact. Hopefully this will be another muse to create an album event better than Commuter.

And well. Go vote.

Peace,
bubbles
http://www.bubblesmusic.net/
www.twitter.com/bubblesmusic

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bubblesbloggy.blogspot.com/2008/10/go-vote-and-new-song.html' title='Go Vote. Couple of items of note and we’ll be out to search a Halloween costume? I wonder what I should be?

Item number one, new song-
My new song is up at www.bubblesmusic.net/music.html. First song in a while. Here’s why. Besides a terrible ear ache, I have been working a number of songs at once. Some which you won’t hear for a while, super secret project. And some about the current economic crisis.
This first song in the series is called Economic Sucker Punch. Let me know if you catch the vibe. In the series I will be exploring different styles of bubbles’ styles. Crankels.

Item number two, new slang-
Crankels is the new work for cool. Straight Crankels. Pronounced cran-kuls. Like, bubbles music is straight crankels. Have you seen his website, http://www.bubblesmusic.net/, its crankels.

Peace,
bubbles
http://www.bubblesmusic.net/
www.cdbaby.com/cd/bubbles2

Down and Out!

Hi Chimps and Chimpettes,

Holy Mole! My right ear hurts likes the dickens. It started a couple of weeks ago and now my hearing is impaired. This truly is beginning to piss me off. It got better for a couple of days then got worse, and now is getting better again. I need to finish a batch of songs for my next bubbles album, and for my new project Watermelon Funk, a new style hip-hop outfit featuring yours truly, bubbles and the big nasty BooSen. But I need my hearing back for that. Argggghhhh.

So what have I been doing since my complications began? Watching DVD’s and looking for the ultimate Hamburger. I watched the NOVA series The Elegant Universe about String theory. Hmmm, I always thought there were extra dimensions of the Universe. In String theory there are 11! And of course catching up on season 3 of HBO’s The Wire.

And I got new pictures! So check out my pics section of my website, http://www.bubblesmusic.net/photos.html and see the fly new me. Well it’s me. And I’m not new, just kinda new.

My I-like page needs some fans folks. Go listen to music, read my blogs, and pictures, find similar artists, and buy music all in one place with hundreds of artists at bubbles on I-like.

So even with my ear problems I am forcing myself back in the mix. Glad to be back. New music and really cool stuff coming soon.

Peace,
bubbles
http://www.bubblesmusic.net/
www.twitter.com/bubblesmusic
Music at
www.cdbaby.com/cd/bubbbles2

Relevant Links:

bubbles = http://www.bubblesmusic.net/
BooSen = http://www.myspace.com/therealboosen
NOVA on PBS = http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/
The Elegant Universe = http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/
The Wire = http://www.hbo.com/thewire/
bubbles on I-like = http://www.ilike.com/artist/Bubbles+%28Portland%2C+OR%29

If you're ignorant please do not go to “The Discussion Electronic Blog”

Hello Chimps and Chimpettes,

This blog is to draw attention to another blog. I pledge to remain unbiased and only probe and prod as a matter of learning.

So please add Discussion Electronic to your Myspace friends and join in on the discusson to help define the role of electronic music in our past, present, and future.

Peace,
bubbles
www.bubblesmsuic.net

Readers Unite behind bubbles

Hello Chimps and Chimpettes,

As Summer draws to it’s close it becomes time to think a bit about indoor pursuits during for up and coming fall. Perhaps tea or a delightful episode of Hole in the Wall are candidates for a worthy pursuit. One thing that is great any time of year is a good book…

……Wait, wait, wait, I am going to have to diverge from my original message to bring you this latest up date. I absolutely hate, with a passion, leaf blowers. It is the worst form of noise pollution. I am considering walking up to the guy who is leaf blowing his lawn a few houses down from mine and sticking a match in the gas tank of the blower. I’ll watch it burn while I announce in a monotone voice, “this pleases me greatly”. But I will restrain. Now back to our original happy and culturally uplifting blog.

…As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted by a leaf blower, one thing that is great any time of year is a good book. And did you know that there is a social networking site for literary types. It’s called Goodreads. You can go join and then add me as your friend at www.goodreads.com/profile/bubblesmusic! If you're on Facebook you can be my friend and get all the Goodreads updates and so much more. For Free. Become my Facebook friend here.

There at http://www.goodreads.com/ you will be able to see a softer side of bubbles. What I read, am reading, and intend to read. Also, and more important is that I will be posting some writing to the site that will be exclusive to Goodreads. I will be posting things like short stories, poems, song lyrics, and much more.

So if you like to read, then go to http://www.goodreads.com/ and become my reading buddy.

Peace,
bubbles
http://www.bubblesmusic.net/
www.goodreads.com/profile/bubblesmusic

State of the bubbles ‘08

This transcript taken from live speech from the Disco Room in Portland OR September 5, 2008.

[bubbles walks up to the podium. There is rawkus applause] epiphany
“Thank you. Thank you.
[More applause]
Thank you. [pause] Thank you. Thanks. Thank you.
[More applause]
Thank you. Thanks. You’re too kind. Thank you.
[Crowd starts to sit, and the applause die down]
Thank you. I would like to extend an extra special thank you tonight to all my lovely friends and fans. You all are so very kind. Thank you.
[bubbles pauses, takes a breath, then speaks]
This is the State of the bubbles Address, and I am very happy to announce the State of the bubbles is golden.
[cheers and applause]
Why golden [makes quotation marks with his fingers] you ask? Golden because over the last year I, bubbles have strengthened my web presence, extended my media reach, made new connections, and have become 140% more dope.
Golden because I have made more music, and made it easier for the normal person to access the world of great culture that is the DIY underground. There are more outlets for you to experience the genus of this monkey,[points to himself] like the music discovery site I-like.com and downloads at Soundclick.com, just search for bubbles from Portland Or. There are more ways to find out more intimate parts of my life like www.goodreads.com/profile/bubblesmusic and Facebook.com.
Golden is the color of gold. Gold is expensive, but I have made my music more affordable than ever with MP3 downloads directly from CD baby at www.CDbaby.com/bubbles2, and on the official bubbles website www.bubbblesmusic.net.
[long pause, he looks around]
But I want to tell you; you the fans, that there is a color more shiny than gold. That color is your color, because this year you, bubbles fans, have listened to or downloaded a bubbles’ track over 35,000 times. [Applause and hoots] This year you have brought my Myspace plays to near 100,000 without the use of spam robots! [Crowd applause] You deserve better than golden. Your new color reflects you because you visited my website and sent me a message telling me you like my music that is available at www.bubblesmusic.net.
This color has come to symbolize achievement and wealth. You deserve the color my friends. You deserve it because you love shiny things like me, and signed up for bubbles E-newsletter “bubbles news” on the bubbles website. Your color is… [Long Pause] Your color is platinum!
[The crowd goes wild, gives bubbles a standing ovation]
And while… And while I am still just golden, you are platinum. And today. And today…
[Pause, then in a lower tone] And today you can pledge to help me, bubbles become platinum too. You can help by telling your friends about bubbles’ website. You can help by coming to shows that you heard about through the bubbles’ newsletter and by forwarding that newsletter to new friends via the simple forward link in the newsletter. If you have a clothing line or make beer, you can sponsor me, bubbles. If you purchase more songs through I-tunes then I can bring you more music. You can take advantage of the great shows featuring me, bubbles, and my affiliates. Affiliates like Absence, BooSen, and Digital Organics of which X24 and Anna Rugani rocked the festival Emerg-N-See with their art. And who can forget the whole 2ndrate crew at www.the2ndrate.com providing up to minute coverage on who you need to know.
[The crowd starts chanting bubbles over and over again]
And my platinum friends, it is time for me to pledge to you a renewed commitment to making cool ass music. Together we can destroy the clutches of crappy music! Root out the evil of re-hashed dookie! We can tell I-tunes how cool the Underground can be. May god bless you. And God bless music!
[The crowd gives bubbles a standing ovation and loud applause with cheers and panties.]

Vote bubbles for President (of beats)

Hi chimps and chimpettes,

Please go vote for my “Time to Rock my Monkey” remix at www.the2ndrate.com. Buying some cloths is about the only time you’ll find bubbles in a mall. Not that I particularly hate them, but growing up in Southern California tainted my image of malls.
I went to a local mall hoping to get my hands on some Levi’s and a shirt. I found the jeans. A shirt, on the other hand, was not purchased. I went from store to store to store. Each store had some stupid preppy look, or some wannabe gansta look. I even saw a bad drawing of Eazy-E on a T-shirt. Come on people. That is so not bubbles.
Which brings me to…I will wear your cloths in my pictures and shows. If I really like you I will promote your band or clothing lines. So designers, bands, Iron-on makers, I don’t care, send me your cloths. Especially cool T’s.
If your interested email me and I’ll tell you where to send these items of clothing and I will send you some music.

Peace,
bubbles

I forgot this exists.

Hi chimps and chimpetts,

I forgot this blog existed.
